Design contract signed for new academic and research building in Maarjamõisa

On 12 April, the University of Tartu and Kauss Arhitektuur OÜ signed the design contract for the new academic and research building. In addition, the partner will design the street area and the parking building.

On 8 December 2023, the University of Tartu announced the architectural solution “Sudoku” by Kauss Arhitektuur OÜ and Väli OÜ as the winning design for the new academic and research building in the Maarjavälja plot in Maarjamõisa.

The designing process is estimated to take two years and cost just over €4.8 million, including VAT. Compared to the estimated cost at the time of the contest, the design contract now includes the price of the construction working documents for (interior) architectural and structural parts.

The university initially planned the total project cost at around €60 million, but the design competition results indicate a higher price. The university has started negotiations to find an external financier for a loan. The cost of the parking, street and academic building will be determined in the course of the public procurement for the works.

Construction is expected to start in 2026 and take approximately 24 months. The works will be carried out in two stages: the car parking building and street in the first, and the building complex in the second stage. If the procurement process and the design and construction work go as planned, teaching and research will start in the new building in 2029.

The new building will house the university’s Institute of Technology, the Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, the Institute of Pharmacy, and the Institute of Bioengineering.
